Italy's premier pest control event was held March 6-7, in Rimini.

Editor’s note: Disinfestando 2013 — the premier pest control event in Italy — was held in Rimini, Italy March 6-7. Frances McKim, editor of Pest Magazine, filed the following report.

RIMINI, ITALY — It might have been wet and foggy in Rimini, Italy but a warm welcome from the organizers awaited attendees of Disinfestando 2013 – the premier pest control event in Italy. Held on March 6-7 at the brand new Palacongressi di Rimini, visitors and exhibitors alike flocked to Rimini.

Organized by the Italian pest control trade association Associazione Nazionale della Imprese di Disinfestestazione (ANID), this was the third time this exhibition had been held. Running alongside the exhibition were very well attended seminar sessions. In total over 1,400 visitors attended over the two days. Italian events always have a unique feeling – which other event do you go to where there is a pianist playing a grand piano surrounded by candelabras, as there was on the INDIA stand?

While the welcome might have been warm the general feeling within the industry is one of caution. With a hung Italian parliament following the recent general election and fears of further financial austerity programmes, pest controllers are feeling the pinch. Whilst customers will not accept pests, they are looking at ways to make savings on their contracts and so pest controllers are seeking ways to trim their costs. But as Francesco Colamartino, president of Sinergitech so beautifully put it: “Italians are used to dealing with complicated things!”

The exhibition hall was buzzing throughout the two days. But what was there to see? What was new? For Italian pest controllers the answer was probably quite a lot as there were several products making their debut onto the Italian market. For example Bell was present introducing their new Detex soft bait with Lumitrack, and P+L Systems had quite a huddle around their BaitSafe rodent and insect bait station – as they did at PestWorld in the fall. But for the seasoned international travellers – with some exceptions – it was more of the same.

In total there were just over 40 exhibitors. Naturally, virtually all the well-known Italian manufacturers and distributors were present, such as GEA. INDIA, OR.MA, Zapi, Vebi, Bleuline, OSD, Copyr, Ecotrade and Colkim plus the usual multinational organisations like Bayer and BASF. Now with a much higher presence following their acquisition of the DuPont products, Syngenta also had a stand. The UK was represented by only two companies – Killgerm/PestWest and P+L Systems. Other exhibitors coming from across Europe included Babolna Bio from Hungary.

What were obvious by their absence, unlike at U.S. shows, were products and services designed for bed bug control. About the only product spotted, and these are also new to Italy, were two products from Canadian manufacturer – BEAP – on the OSD stand. The first is the clever Detector bed bug coaster and the second, the BB Quick Response kit.
