PHOENIX, Ariz. — Viking Pest Control President Ryan Bradbury was presented with the Young Entrepreneur Award, while Terminix Service’s Marie Horner was given NPMA's Women of Excellence Award at PestWorld's Thursday General Session, a presentation given by ‘Freakonomics’ author Stephen Dubner.

Bradbury was recognized with the second annual Young Entrepreneur Award, sponsored by Rentokil. John Myers, president and CEO, Rentokil North America, presented Bradbury with the award.

"The NPMA Young Entrepreneur Award is a new industry award established to recognize young entrepreneurs working in the professional pest management industry who have helped create or develop an industry, business, or have stewarded a meaningful industry concept to fruition," said Myers. "Amazingly, some of our nominees this year have done all of these things."

Bradbury, who worked as a day trader and for a pharmaceutical company prior to joining the family business, has played in integral role in Viking’s recent growth the past 15 years. Since Bradbury came on board, the company has grown by 350 percent. Bradbury has been an active NPMA member, serving on numerous committees. He’s also been active in local charities/organizations, such as  the Association of Retarded Citizens of Somerset County, and he donates blood every eight weeks.

Bradbury thanked NPMA and Rentokil for the recognition, which he said he shares equally with his other family members involved in the industry, dad Ed Bradbury, and brother Dan Bradbury. “It was certainly a surprise and a great honor,” said Bradbury. “I really think that there is a great generation of people in the industry right now — people in the same age-frame as me —  that are doing great things, so to be chosen is really flattering.”

Marie Horner, vice president of operations, Terminix Service, Greensboro, N.C., was recognized with NPMA's Women of Excellence Award, presented by Orkin. Orkin President Gene Iarocci presented Horner with the award.

Horner began her career in pest control in 1998, working for Steritech, before joining Terminix (Fayetteville) in 2002. She began working for Terminix Service (Greensboro, N.C.) in 2004 and has risen through the ranks, being appointed vice president of operations in January 2013.

“For me it’s the highest honor I could ever imagine ever having received," she said. "While the majority of people in the industry are men, the ones who are have made such big differences in their businesses, and in their states, and in the industry as a whole. To be counted among them is overwhelming.”

Presented by Orkin, the NPMA Women of Excellence Award recognizes women who advance the pest management industry every day, in every way. The international honor drew nominations from across the pest management industry including PMPs, manufacturers, research organizations, etc. These individuals demonstrate outstanding leadership and have made notable contributions to the development and growth of the profession, their business, and other women in the industry.

Attendees heard from Stephen Dubner, author of “Freakonomics” and “Super Freakonomics,” in a session sponsored by FMC Professional Solutions.
NPMA also recognized Victor Hammel, chairman emeritus, Rentokil North America (see related story) and its committees and committee members of the year.

Following the awards presentations, attendees heard from Stephen Dubner, author of “Freakonomics” and “Super Freakonomics,” in a session sponsored by FMC Professional Solutions.
