all kidding aside, I've heard good reviews for the gels that incorporate pepper. They redirect activity. You could use this to make areas undesirable.

If the area is only filled with rats and there is no possibility of harming anything then except traps rat cakes are also available that can be spread everywhere in the place into small pieces. On consuming this chemical product rats will flee out in open and hence die.
