NPMA President Laura Simpson

BOSTON, Mass. — More than 3,000 attendees representing 65 countries traveled to Boston, last week, for PestWorld 2012, NPMA’s annual conference and tradeshow.

As part of Wednesday’s opening ceremony, NPMA President Laura Simpson provided an update on NPMA’s future-oriented strategic plan. During the past year NPMA has sought input from industry members via online surveys and focus groups to determine if the association is meeting members’ needs and what NPMA’s focus should be moving forward. Some of the findings from this survey and from these focus groups include:

·         The majority of respondents (50 percent) indicated that their primary reason for being a NPMA member was to access association benefits. Other popular answers from respondents included: to support the industry and its stewardship; to gain credibility with current and existing customers; and to participate in state activities

·          Respondents answered that government relations was most the most valuable service provided by NPMA

·         Other interesting findings included:

o   90 percent believe NPMA membership enhances credibility

o   60 percent believe NPMA affiliation is important to their customers

o   77 percent believe NPMA provides them an opportunity to influence industry policies through NPMA

o   80 percent believe NPMA supports their business growth

o   94 percent believe they are exposed to new ideas and expertise by involvement with the association

WHAT’S NEXT. In February and in July, the NPMA Board of Directors met to review the detailed survey and focus reports and to develop a series of goals to better align the association with its members needs and wants. To that end the following goals were identified:

Goal One — To be the definitive source for education information and resources for the pest management professional

Goal Two — To proactively and positively affect regulatory and legislative outcomes for the pest management professional

Goal Three — To promote the importance of professional pest management and strengthen the public’s perception of our industry

“Now it’s the time for NPMA staff and board of directors to roll up our sleeves and develop our tactical growth methods,” said Simpson. “Over next months you will begin seeing the fruits of these efforts.”

A ROUSING WELCOME. PestWorld 2012 kicked off in true Boston style, on Wednesday, with the PestWorld Pep Rally opening ceremony sponsored by Bayer. Mascots and cheerleaders from the Boston sports scene were center stage, along with the Boston University Marching Band, all leading up to the Exhibit Hall Grand Opening and Welcome Reception, also sponsored by Bayer.

STIRRING SPEAKERS. This year’s Opening General Session, sponsored by Dow AgroSciences, included a moving presentation by Kyle Maynard, a quadruple amputee with a long list of personal accomplishments. Maynard is a star wrestler and mixed martial arts fighter who has been inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and has received the Highest Recognition Award of the Secretary of Health and Human Services for his work as a motivational speaker and humanitarian. He has overcome greater obstacles than most of us will in our lifetimes. And if that’s not enough, he recently became the first man to ever hike on all fours to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Maynard provided a truly inspiring message that no obstacle is too great to overcome.

Friday included the Industry Awards and General Session, sponsored by FMC Professional Solutions. Political strategists Paul Begala and Michael Murphy highlighted the session. Democrat Paul Begala and Republican Michael Murphy are two of the most respected strategists working in U.S. politics, with Begala having played a major role in every election since 1984 and Murphy behind Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney during their respective runs for governor. Both Begala and Murphy shared with attendees their predictions for the November election.

On Saturday, NPMA hosted “One Night on Beacon Hill,” sponsored by BASF. Attendees were transported to Boston’s most sophisticated neighborhood, Beacon Hill, for the Beacon Hill Gala to celebrate the closing of PestWorld 2012.
