The Professional Pest Management Association awards New Jersey Middle School $3,000 toward science education.

| March 20, 2012

FAIRFAX, Va. — The Professional Pest Management Alliance (PPMA), which serves as the public outreach arm of the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), announced today the winners of its third annual Pest PSA Contest, a national science and technology competition for students.  The PPMA, through its educational children’s website, PestWorldForKids.org, awarded Red Bank Middle School of Red Bank, NJ with a $3,000 grant in support of science education for the third consecutive year.

The students at Red Bank Middle School used rap lyrics and green screen technology to deliver their public service announcements (PSAs). “I Hate Rats” won top honors in this year’s contest. “Every year, Red Bank Middle School stands out for its high-quality work and the students do an exceptional job of discussing the important health risks associated with household pests,” said Missy Henriksen, executive director of PPMA.

Runner-up Lakewood Christian Schools of Long Beach, CA also received a $1,000 grant for its PSA, “Flea On Trial.”

“The contest is just one of the many ways PPMA promotes knowledge of professional pest control among students to foster understanding of our industry and is a great way for children to learn about the fascinating world of insects while having fun in the classroom,” Henriksen said. “These collaborative projects in the classroom also spark discussions with parents at home, thereby reaching our larger audience — current consumers.”

Teachers and students in grades four through eight were challenged to create educational television PSAs highlighting the health and property risks posed by common household pests such as rodents, ants, cockroaches and stinging insects. Entries were judged on originality, creativity, health messaging and overall appeal.

PestWorldForKids.org is developed for teachers and students in grades K through 8 and features a pest glossary, pest guide, downloadable factsheets, report writing center, science fair projects, lesson plans and games. It’s designed to teach children about insects and rodents in their natural habitats, and the health and property risks posed by pests once they find their way into the home.
