PHOENIX, Ariz. — Victor Hammel, a long-time pest management professional and vice chairman of the Professional Pest Management Alliance, was presented NPMA’s Pinnacle Award this morning at PestWorld 2013.

The Pinnacle Award, NPMA’s most prestigious accolade, honors an individual who has contributed not only to the success of the association but to the industry as a whole over a lifetime or career.

NPMA President Kevin Pass presented the award to Hammel after highlighting some of Hammel’s accomplishments in the industry. Hammel currently serves as chairman emeritus of Rentokil North America and was formerly co-owner and chief executive officer of JC Ehrlich, Reading, Pa.

At age 8 Hammel was a bait bagger for JC Ehrlich. He joined the firm full-time in 1971 when Ehrlich had 100 employees and revenue of $1 million. When Hammel and his brother sold the firm in 2006, it was worth $124 million and had 1,250 employees.

Additionally, Hammel was a co-founder of PestSure (a provider of insurance to the pest management industry) in the late 1970s. He also played a key role in the development of PPMA and currently serves on the PPMA board, which Pass said may perhaps be Hammel’s most long-lasting legacy to the industry.

While his firm was successful in many ways, Hammel said the best part of being in the pest management industry is the people.

“The real reward was when visiting the offices and having informal conversations with some of our people and them talking about vacations, or remodeling their homes, or their children they sent to college from earnings they made from working with us,” he said. “That was what this was about for us. The financial was nice but it was sort of a byproduct.”

Past Pinnacle Award recipients include Mike Potter (2011), John Osmun (2009), Paul Hardy (2007), PCT Owner Richard Foster (2006), Jerry Mix (2006) and Norman Goldenberg (2004).
