Termimesh Makes Contribution to 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' Project

AUSTIN, Texas — When the home builder partnering with “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” the ABC television show that rebuilds homes for persons in special circumstances, needed to protect a home from termites, he turned to Termimesh System, the industry’s only permanent physical termite control barrier.

 Termimesh, the Austin-based supplier of the Termimesh System, was asked to install Termistop pipe flanges and blockouts in the home of volunteer firefighter Missy Zdroj who lost her Smithville, Texas, home to wildfires last fall. The episode is set to air later this year.

The company was invited to participate in the project by EFC Custom Homes and President Eric Christophe who was the general contractor for the project, according the Termimesh, LLC General Manager Glenn Bjornaas.

“We were very pleased to be able to give back to the community, especially after the devastation the wildfires had caused to residents in the affected areas,” said Bjornaas. “It is part of our company’s core philosophy to be a good neighbor and we wanted to do our part.”

Certified installers Matt Mader and Eric McKinney spent a full day in early December at the construction site outside of Austin installing pipe flanges and blockouts around surface penetrations for plumbing and electrical wiring thus blocking key termite access points to the structure. They were joined by hundreds of other craftsman who were tasked with building Zdroj’s new 2,500-square-foot house in less than a week.

Bjornaas said the pre-fabricated Termimesh pipe flanges, known as Termistop, were ideally suited for the project since the installation process was fully integrated with the electrical and plumbing work. “There was no down time waiting for a traditional soil treatment to be applied and that was important with the time constraints involved,” said Bjornaas.

The Termimesh system builds a permanent physical barrier against termites using marine- grade stainless steel installed into the slab of new construction. While the mesh is flexible, it is too hard for termites to chew through and too small for the destructive insects to squeeze through. “The Termimesh technology provides customers with peace of mind that their new home or office is protected against termites with a sound physical barrier,” said Bjornaas.
