PARSIPPANY, N.J. – Western Pest Services, a New Jersey-based pest management company serving communities throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, today announced Barbara Hunter as the recipient of its inaugural Women of Distinction Award. Hunter, who currently serves as Director of Imported Commodities, began her career at Western in 1976 as Marketing Manager and was the first female to hold a management position within the company.

“This is a tremendous honor for me, professionally and personally,” said Hunter, a resident of Green Brook, N.J. “While I was the first woman in a management position at Western, I have seen those boundaries disappear with unlimited opportunities at every level for women today. I appreciate the mentoring I’ve received through the years to grow within the pest control industry, which is often viewed as heavily male-dominated.”

The Women of Distinction Award recognizes women across the Western division of Rollins, Inc. who demonstrate outstanding personal leadership and community involvement, and make notable contributions to the growth and development of the pest control industry and women within the company.

“Barbara is a mentor and role model to both women and men alike,” said Tom Walters, President of Western Pest Services. “Our corporate philosophy has always been one of integrity, participation, exceeding customer expectations and giving back – Barbara’s career has exemplified these cornerstone values.”

As Director of Imported Commodities, Hunter is consistently active in Delaware River ports and an advocate for imported perishables, and she created the industry’s first port terminal food safety and security program prior to September 11, 2001. In addition, Hunter has received a number of awards and distinctions, including:

- The first woman to receive the “Spirit of the Port Award” by the Seamen’s Church Institute for her leadership and integrity in the Delaware River port community.
- The first woman to receive the “Friend of Chile Award” by the Chilean American Chamber of Commerce.
- The first woman in 118 years to serve on the Board of Directors of the Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay.
- Presented the “Make a Difference Award” for exemplary volunteerism by nonprofit Center for Hope Hospice.

Today, Western Pest Services employs more than 50 women in technical and leadership positions at all levels within the company and continues to foster women’s professional growth through its Women’s Leadership Council, training programs and leadership development classes.
