ROCKFORD, Tenn. - Nisus Corporation received notification from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on Oct. 7, 2009 that they have been awarded U.S. Patent No. 7597902 (see related article). This patent deals with Bora-Care’s ability to prevent termite tubing on concrete, and states that Bora-Care “…provides a termite barrier which is effective to substantially reduce termite tube formation across the surface of the cementitious building component.” This is significant, as termites often gain entry into homes tubing over such materials. This is the sixth patent Nisus Corporation has received for Bora-Care.
“After seeing termites tube three stories high on the outside of concrete buildings in Thailand, we realized that traditional soil treatments and approaches were not going to perform in many types of construction used around the world. In our testing, we discovered that in addition to treating wood, Bora-Care would also stop termite mud tubing on non-wood surfaces like concrete,” says Dr. Jeff Lloyd, Vice President of Research and Development at Nisus. “This was confirmed at LSU in Dr. Ramsey Smith’s tests using treated concrete and the much more aggressive Formosan subterranean termite. Bora-Care performed exceptionally; we believe because unlike other termiticides, the active ingredient is not broken down by UV light nor by the high pH of cementitious materials. The non-volatile patent mixture of glycols also carries the active into termites’ tubes to target the pest during their tube construction. It is great to finally receive the patent after all this work and time.”
Bora-Care has been used as a primary “stand-alone” termite new construction treatment for the last 10 years with incredibly successful results. In fact, more than 850,000 homes have now been pretreated with Bora-Care.
