DAVIE, Fla. — Dudley (Doug) Palmer, who headed up the Pest Control Technology program at Broward Community College for more than 30 years, died on Nov. 16. He was 81.

Doug was a University of Florida graduate who majored in entomology and horticulture. Prior to joining Broward College he worked for the Florida Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Industry as a plant inspector.

While at BCC, Doug started the Pest Control Tutoring School that was the first of its kind tutoring students on how to take the State of Florida pest control exams. Many of his students excelled, passing the exams the first time. He always said if you want to pass the exams, you need to put the time into studying. If you do this, you should achieve the results you’re looking for. When Doug’s students received a passing grade and relayed that information to him, Doug would smile like a proud father often does when getting good reports about his children.

Doug taught hundreds of students about insects and pest control. Many of those  students eventually went into their own business and became very successful  because of his teachings.  He was always interested in his students and was an excellent educator. Doug made things interesting and often lightened things up when you were in his classes. Students not only learned about the many phases of pest control but also laughed during Doug’s lectures at many of the funny things he often said or did.

He was the ultimate educator and truly a unique individual who always had his students’ best interests in mind when teaching them about the biology of cockroaches or how to understand the questions on the State exams.

Doug retired from Broward College in 1994 and moved to Avon Park where he lived until his passing. He had many friends and all of us are so much better off knowing that we had the honor and privilege of know this good decent man in our life time.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, Nov. 25, in the Olmsted House at Bok Tower Botanical Gardens 1151 Tower Blvd, Lake Wales, FL 33853 at noon. Due to time restraints, there also will be a celebration of Life / Memorial for Doug on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 2 p.m., at
