Natular G Larvicide Earns OMRI Listing

Product joins four other Natular formulations that comply with organic production standards.

ROSELLE, Ill. — Natular G, a granular formulation of spinosad-based mosquito larvicides recently introduced by Clarke, has been OMRI Listed, indicating that it complies with the Organic Materials Review Institute’s Policy and Standards Manual and the requirements of the USDA National Organic Program Rule.

“When we can give our customers more options for mosquito control — especially those who need to balance public health with sensitive ecosystem — it’s a win for everyone,” said J. Lyell Clarke, president and CEO of Clarke. “Now that Natular G is OMRI Listed, it opens another door for mosquito control professionals.”

Natular larvicide, which uses the active ingredient spinosad to control mosquito larvae in aquatic habitats, was honored earlier this year as a 2010 U.S. EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award winner. The award recognized Natular’s patent-pending plaster matrix that releases optimal levels of product during times when mosquitoes breed, the company said.

The active ingredient in Natular, spinosad, which was discovered and produced by Dow AgroSciences, is used in more than 250 crops in more than 85 countries, with additional uses in animal health and pet care. Natular has been registered as a “Reduced Risk” larvicide by the U.S. EPA. Five formulations are listed in the OMRI Products List and can be used in organic production.

“Natular is a next-generation larvicide with strong potential to reduce the pesticide load in the environment.” Clarke said. “It allows for more prescriptive larviciding, using the exact amounts of active ingredients needed to control mosquito larvae, at toxicity rates far below other products.”

By creating several proprietary tablet formulations that insulates then slowly releases the spinosad molecule, Clarke has made spinosad formulations which provide control for up to 180 days, the company says. This matrix is comprised of compounds approved for use by the USDA in production of certified organic products.

According to Clarke, Natular is effective at use rates two to 10 times lower than traditional synthetic chemistries, is 15 times less toxic than organophosphate alternatives, is not persistent in the environment or toxic to wildlife, and eliminates the use of hazardous materials and processes in its manufacture.

Registered for use domestically and abroad, seven commercial formulations of Natular are available for use in larval control in a range of mosquito-control environments, from catch basins to salt marshes.

Founded in 1997, the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) is a nonprofit organization providing organic certifiers, growers, manufacturers and suppliers an independent review of products intended for use in certified organic production, handling and processing.
