We’re seeing new faces in the Dow AgroSciences hallways these days. One reason is that as a company we have been enjoying rapid growth for several years. Another reason is that a few of our long time company veterans have or are about to hit the retirement age. So, we’re hiring new talent. The positive news is that many pest management companies say they are or will be adding people for the very same reasons.

Some might say young people are different today. I agree. They are savvy, totally comfortable with technology and want to drive change. They add an energy and fresh perspective that challenges the way things have always been done. The trick is to integrate new talent in a way that contributes to your unique company culture so that the things you are proud of will live on for the next generation. Get that equation correct and great things can happen.

Our industry has always been about the remarkable people who work in it. So, we’re pleased to be able to sponsor PCT’s Companies to Watch again this year. I appreciate that it highlights some young industry up-and-comers, as well as some companies that simply think and act young. Progress in our industry always happens at the individual company level when certain people decide to try new ways of doing things and then share those ideas with others. The constant flow of new ideas and energy brought forth by companies like those featured in these pages is the engine that drives our industry forward.

Our industry is constantly in transition, but the rate of change is speeding up as more and more online information is available to the consumers we serve and to the general public. Not all that information is accurate or positive. That’s a challenge. The solution is to be open to new ways of communicating our message effectively. Hiring the right young talent and giving them an opportunity to contribute ideas and energy will help our industry make the changes necessary to help ensure future success.
