[Termite Control] Termite Market: An Update

Bayer: Pest Management  Professionals Save Time, Money With Premise Foam in a Can

For termite treatments, homeowners demand proven, reliable elimination with the least amount of chemical and home invasion possible. With Premise Foam in a can, pest management professionals can provide homeowners with instant control on the spot — which saves time and money, according to Bayer Environmental Science.

The only non-repellent available in an instant, portable application, each 18-ounce can of Premise Foam is pre-mixed for perfect consistency, which eliminates set up time, mixing concerns, and bulky equipment for pest management professionals, the company reports.

Ideal for targeted applications, Premise Foam expands at a rate of 30:1, which delivers a lethal dose of imidacloprid to hard-to-reach areas, such as wall voids, termite galleries and floor joists. Premise Foam provides the same long-lasting residual of traditional Premise Liquid, and is ideal for subterranean and drywood termites, as well as ants.

For more information on Premise Foam, contact your local Bayer Environmental Science representative or distributor, or visit the company’s site. Training videos are available by calling 800/331-2867.

FMC: Introducing New Chemistry For Termites In 2005
FMC Specialty Products Business is introducing a new chemistry to the termite control market later this year. FMC SPB has signed development and distribution agreements with Nippon Soda Co. (Nisso) for exclusive access to acetamiprid in the U.S. termite and general household pest segments, in both the professional and consumer markets. Acetamiprid belongs to the neonicotinoid family of insecticides and has demonstrated outstanding activity against an array of pests of economic importance to the pest control industry, including termites, roaches and ants. FMC is also actively developing other new products for all pest control market segments with expected registrations in 2005.

FMC remains fully committed to the continued growth of the Talstar family of insecticides, led by its flagship brand, TalstarOne multi-insecticide, which is labeled for pre- and post-construction termite control. Talstar is the leading pyrethroid on the market today, the company says. FMC will continue to expand the label for Talstar, a pyrethroid, for pests and use sites.

In addition, FMC continues to support Prevail termiticide, which delivers long lasting protection, the company reports. Binding strongly to the soil, Prevail won’t move away from structures. In addition, Prevail meets the low EPA toxicity category for a “caution” signal word, yet will remain effective even if only a small amount remains in the soil. The active ingredient in Prevail, cypermethrin, prevents termites from crossing the barrier and kills them on contact, FMC reports.

Sentricon Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary
Celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year and recently recognized as the No. 1 brand in termite protection (according to IPSOS-Insight 2004), the Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination System now offers double the elimination power with new Recruit IV termite bait. Each Baitube device contains nearly twice as much bait as before. Recruit IV also features a new bait matrix that is six times more preferred by termites than the previous Recruit III matrix. Additionally, Recruit IV provides a flexible monitoring schedule for Authorized Operators, who now have the option to monitor either monthly or every other month.

Also according to Dow AgroSciences, the company says there are generally two treatment options for homes infested with drywood termites: treating only the accessible wood or treating the entire structure. Whole-structure fumigation with Vikane gas fumigant offers 100 percent control of drywood termite infestations throughout an entire structure, including infestations hidden in inaccessible areas, according to Dow AgroSciences. Nearly all whole-structure drywood termite fumigations last year were performed with Vikane, the company reports. Vikane was introduced more than 40 years ago.

BASF Introduces New Termidor 10-Year Pledge
BASF Professional Pest Control announces the expansion of its original 5-Year Termidor Pledge to 10 years. The comprehensive new Termidor 10-Year Pledge underscores the effectiveness of a Termidor treatment (both conventional and PerimeterPLUS), backed by government testing and everyday usage by thousands of Termidor Partners, according to BASF.
The Termidor 10-Year Pledge from BASF states that in the unlikely event a Termidor-treated structure requires re-treatment, BASF will pay for the additional Termidor used, as well as any labor costs involved.

The pledge is valid for new structures that receive a full conventional Termidor treatment, as well as structures receiving BASF’s new Termidor PerimeterPLUS treatment. The new pledge also covers homes currently registered under the original Termidor 5-Year Pledge — provided all conditions of the pledge are met.

The Termidor 10-Year Pledge is a reflection of new data from the USDA Forest Service showing 100 percent control at all Termidor concrete slab and ground board testing sites since 1994. In these tests, no termites have ever penetrated Termidor-treated soil, and no damage has ever been noted through 10 years.

The pledge is valid for structures receiving a conventional Termidor treatment, as well as structures receiving a Perimeter-PLUS treatment.

Bora-Care Protection Now Includes Concrete
Bora-Care is a borate-based termiticide, insecticide and fungicide that is directly applied to wood and concrete, creating a barrier as well as eliminating wood as a food source. Only Bora-Care is fully labeled and approved for use on wood as a stand-alone 2-foot barrier termite pretreatment and meets the sill plate end-cut requirements set by building codes and the AWPA, the manufacturer reports. Bora-Care is also used on the inside of foundation walls 2 feet up from the ground and 2 to 8 inches in from the base plate on slab construction. A Bora-Care 1+1 treatment prevents Formosan and other subterranean termites from tubing across treated wood and concrete. A 1+5 whole-house treatment protects against all wood-destroying organisms in the entire structure, including drywood termites, wood-destroying beetles, carpenter ants and fungal decay, the company says.

Syngenta’s Termite Protection Offering Going From Strong To Stronger in 2005
While Syngenta Professional Products is adding a new solution to its portfolio in 2005, its staple in the fight against termites remains the same — Demon insecticide. Demon is the “tried and tested” choice of today’s pest management professionals seeking strong efficacy and satisfaction towards a builder’s pre-treat liquid requirements, Syngenta reports. Demon features the active ingredient cypermethrin and for more than 17 years it has been used against a wide variety of termites, including Formosan and Eastern subterranean termites.

One of Syngenta’s most innovative products is IMPASSE Termite Blocker, which provides protection at some of the most common termite entry points. Termites often use gaps in the slab foundation around utility penetrations and bath traps to enter a home, and the only time to protect these vulnerable areas is before a home is built. IMPASSE Termite Blocker provides long-term protection at these gaps built right into the foundation.

Expanding Syngenta’s portfolio of termite control products is OptiGard ZT, a new broad-spectrum product for control of drywood termites, carpenter ants and nuisance pests. OptiGard ZT was registered by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2004 and will be available for commercial sale in 2005.
OptiGard ZT includes the active ingredient thiamethoxam and can be applied as a wood injection treatment for drywood termites and carpenter ants, or may be applied to structural voids for control of nuisance pests. OptiGard ZT is applied as a zone treatment to infested areas, using liquid or foam applications. With proper detection and inspection, zone treatments are an effective and efficient alternative to whole house treatments, including fumigation, according to Syngenta.

DOT For Preventive Control Of Subterranean And Drywood Termites
Armor-Guard is pure disodium octaborate tetrahydrate powder labeled for the remedial and preventive control of subterranean and drywood termites, wood-boring beetles, carpenter ants and decay fungi. Armor-Guard may be used either as a 10 percent or 15 percent aqueous solution or as a crack and crevice treatment for general insect control. Armor-Guard’s 17-pound rectangular shaped pail takes up less room on a truck and is less likely to tip while transporting, the company reports. The “flip-top” lid makes it easy to open and close while providing a weather tight seal that keeps the borate powder dry and free-flowing. Armor-Guard is also available in 1-pound plastic bags.
