BELMONT, Mass. — In 1978, Buono Pest Control was founded by Benedict J. Buono in Belmont, Mass., and this is where the company remains as it celebrates its 40th anniversary.

Buono, a Vietnam veteran, started the company as a one-man operation, and worked diligently to make a name for himself and Buono Pest Control. Soon, he had the means to build up his workforce, and Buono decided to keep the business within his family by hiring his brother. Buono Pest Control continued to grow as Benedict Buono hired two more of his brothers and then his daughter, Marillian Missiti. As it grew, the company made a name for itself as a reputable family-owned and -operated service provider.

The company remained a family business for approximately 25 years. During this time, Buono defined itself by specializing in particularly sensitive pest control accounts, such as hospitals, universities and research institutions.

Marillian Missiti, president of Buono Pest Control and niece of COO Steve Buono, said that her family made the company successful by always “providing and concentrating on the quality of service to our clients with professionalism and knowledge and not to be sales driven.”

Missiti added that she and her uncle working together “have a great balance on taking Buono Pest Control to another level” and is just another example of Buono Pest Control’s success as a family business.

Buono Pest Control eventually grew to where they needed to hire outside of the family. Today, the company has 12 employees and continues to grow. Missiti attributes much of the company’s evolution to Buono Pest Control’s commitment to being involved with the resources around them.

“Staying involved with the National Pest Management Association has been a major resource for education, networking and growing,” said Missiti. She also said that Buono Pest Control’s involvement in NPMA helped the company recently become a Women-Owned Business Enterprise.

To celebrate this anniversary milestone, Buono Pest Control conducted fun activities on social media, such as giving a box of chocolate mice to the 500th person to “like” their Facebook page and having a Facebook Live drawing for a $100 gift card for those who “liked” and commented on the company’s anniversary post. Buono Pest Control also took employees and their spouses to Florida for a long weekend of celebration.
