Editor’s note: P.E.S.T. Relief International, a non-profit organization for professionals in the pest management industry whose mission is to empower, sustain and transform the lives of the destitute and the defenseless, had a busy 2019. To close out the year, industry professionals from New Jersey to Texas joined their resources together to save the home of a single mom and her children. P.E.S.T. Relief International provided the following recap of the group’s most recent donation.

Mary is a domestic abuse survivor and single mom of 5 children, ages 2, 4, 6, 10, and 17 years old. She left her husband in July 2018 as a result of years of physical and emotional abuse. Over the course of 10 years, she was physically assaulted over 100 times, resulting in scarring, dental damage, and trauma to both her and her children.

After struggling for a year to make ends meet, Mary encountered a bed bug infestation while learning that her temporary job had been suspended.  With no income to pay her rent. Mary found herself hopeless and desperate to save her home and her children.  Mary was served an eviction notice just days before P.E.S.T. Relief intervened through the assistance of faithful supporters of the organization.

Glenda Lehmberg with CPCO of GA, AP&G’s John Dougherty, and Dianne Cornwell, a 25-year veteran of Univar, reached out to their network in the pest control industry to impact in the life of a woman who would have otherwise been forgotten.

Many answered the request for aid, and in just 10 days, $900 was raised to pay for her rent and groceries.  Additionally, donated chemicals, products, and bed bug treatment “came down the chimney with care” while presents, including PJ’s for Christmas Eve, magically appeared. Even elves showed up to decorate the house with Christmas lights.  “I can’t thank you enough,” Mary texted on Christmas Day. “The girls LOVE the lights! I just wanted to say thank you for everything!”

Andrea Hancock, an owner of Mattress Safe and the founder of P.E.S.T. Relief International, also shared her gratitude, “Watching the industry join their resources, time, and charity to save this family has been the best Christmas gift I could ever receive.  Thank you so much to everyone who supported this initiative and all that we have done these last five years together as Professionals who Empower, Sustain and Transform lives.”

P.E.S.T. Relief International is thankful to the 24 volunteers and supporters from the pest control industry, as well as the following manufacturers and service providers.
