The buzzword right now in pest management is "public health." Although we all know pest management professionals are "protectors of the environment," sometimes it doesn’t hurt to be reminded of this important fact.
Since this month’s issue of PCT focuses on the topic of public health, we thought we’d include a list of some of the latest public health-related products available to pest management professionals. On the following pages are just some of the products that are available to the marketplace that can help you promote the industry’s public health mission.

B&G CHEMICALS & EQUIPMENT COMPANY
The Phoenix Fogger line of mosquito control equipment was launched in 1999. The ultra quiet, all-in-one Mozzie Electric Fog, a ULV fogging device, has two lockable doors that allow easy access to components and provide security. It has a unique 12-volt system complete with a marine-type deep cell battery; an automatic override circuit breaker that protects a vehicle’s electrical system; is easily transportable and stackable; and its flow rate is 2 to 8 ounces a minute. All components and the 4½-gallon pesticide tank are encased with heavy-duty thread bright .125 grade aluminum.
BAYER ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Developed in conjunction with the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control in the United States, Scourge is widely regarded as the mosquito adulticide many pest management professionals prefer, the company says. Scourge combines the pyrethroid resmethrin with PBO to produce an insecticide that causes fast knockdown and death with no "biting frenzy" and a residual that’s measured in minutes, not weeks. Since Scourge is non-corrosive, it won’t damage spray equipment or the paintwork of cars or planes. The product can inhibit mosquitoes’ flying, feeding and mating abilities. As a concentrate, Scourge 18%+54% can be readily diluted in light mineral oil, soybean oil or other suitable solvent or diluent. The ready-to-use formulation is Scourge 4%+12%. Both are federally registered for ground and aerial applications and have no setback from water.
COASTAL MOSQUITO CONTROL
Coastal Mosquito Control is the manufacturer of the CoastalMister automatic mosquito misting system and distributor of an assortment of natural and synthetic insecticides, including the CoastalMist line of pyrethrum- and permethrin-based products used in automatic misting systems. Installed either directly by Coastal or through its dealer network of state certified and licensed pest control operators, the CoastalMister system and its CoastalMist products can be used effectively as a single defense to mosquitoes or in combination with other pest management techniques and applications to provide an integrated outdoor pest solution.
The CoastalMister system consists of a poly drum reservoir, on the top of which is mounted a brass pump, 1/3 HP electric motor and electric timer. Through clear or black nylon tubing and brass/stainless precision nozzles installed under the direction of licensed pest control professionals, a fine mist of precisely measured insecticide is delivered at predetermined times and durations to create a "protection zone" defense against mosquitoes and other outdoor pests.
CURTIS DYNA-FOG
The Maxi-Pro 145 ULV from Curtis Dyna-Fog is built from only the highest quality materials with rigorous quality control at all stages of assembly. It is coated with chemical-resistant epoxy paint and the Dyna-Fog Dynaflow nozzle will produce 90 percent of the droplets below 20 microns when used at the recommended flow rates and pressures. This ULV applicator has a digital tachometer/hour meter; a directionally adjustable nozzle head; an 18 hp Briggs & Stratton air-cooled twin cylinder engine; electric start with rope start capability, charging system, and spark arrestor fitted to the exhaust; a liquid filled pressure gauge to monitor nozzle air pressure; a single nozzle to produce a precise droplet size for optimum results; and many other features.
MIRACLE MARKETING
Any pest management professional interested in a public health services IPM program needs to consider the lil’ Hummer backpack as the primary tool for not just killing unwanted pests but removing them along with other food sources. The lil’ Hummer will aid in reducing the amount of sprays and baits used on the job while improving the PCO’s image, Miracle Marketing said. The lil’ Hummer is ideal for multiple jobs including spiders, cockroaches, rodent droppings, wasps and hornets, swarming insects, and pantry and fabric pests. It comes with a full line of attachments ideally suited to pest control. The lil’ Hummer is equipped with filtration that stops virtually 100 percent of airborne allergens, including cockroach and dust mite feces, pollen and mold spores.
MONSTER MOSQUITO SYSTEMS
The Monster Mosquito System can guard your customers’ yards against insects using pyrethrum. The system uses a 30-gallon reservoir of pyrethrum mix to store and regulate its release with an easy-to-use timer. Precision nozzles connected by nylon tubes are installed on the outer eaves of your customers’ homes and along the fence line. At the designated time, a light biodegradable mist is released into the air, deterring mosquitoes and other biting insects. The system features: a low level indicator light, a two-year parts warranty, high quality nozzles and tubing, a 24-hour timer, a 30-gallon low profile reservoir, and many other features. All that needs to be done is for the timer to be set.
NISUS CORP.
Tim-Bor is used for the control of wood decay fungi, wood-boring beetles, carpenter ants and drywood termites. As a water-soluble borate powder, Tim-bor diffuses into the wood and acts as a wood insecticide, fungicide and preservative. Tim-bor won’t break down over time, therefore offering longer-lasting protection, the company says. Tim-bor is easy to mix, is virtually odorless and has no known resistance. The product is highly effective, water soluble, economical, odorless, can be used in conjunction with fumigation for residual protection and formulated with a concern for the environment, the company reports. Tim-bor’s active ingredient is Disodium Octoborate Tetrahydrate and the product will not break down over time.
UNIVAR
Univar’s MasterLine Kontrol 4-4 and Kontrol 30-30 has proven to be effective against a wide range of mosquito species. Kontrol is a synthetic pyrethroid that can be used for most mosquito applications. The products offer quick knockdown, no cholinesterase inhibition, are non-corrosive and have low mammalian toxicity. Relief starts in just seconds and insects are both knocked down and killed. Kontrol won’t damage cars, trucks or airplanes, the company says. The product is easy to apply by air and ground ULV, thermal foggers and by mist barrier applications. The product is also effective against biting and non-biting midges, black flies and most diptera. Kontrol has no offensive odor, the company reports.
VISION PEST MANAGEMENT TECHNOLOGY
Vision Pest Management Technology has introduced the Pro Stinger Power Duster, which provides pest management professionals with a safe and effective tool for the treatment of stinging insects and other pests that can be treated with dusts, including carpenter ants, roaches, rats and mice. After several prototypes and more than five years of field testing, the Pro Stinger Power Duster is made of industrial-grade lightweight aluminum materials with heavy duty, quick connectors. Air and dust tight, the Pro Stinger Power Duster forces just enough dust into the area for effective treatment.
ZOECON PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS
Zoëcon Professional Products is offering pest management professionals a new, comprehensive marketing kit full of tools for building pest control business while minimizing the threat of disease-carrying mosquitoes. The kit contains bill stuffers, door hangers, bumper stickers, and brochures with questions that customers and prospects frequently ask about mosquito control. In addition, a CD-ROM with ad slicks, a press release and a PowerPoint presentation provides a complete package for helping PCOs market themselves as mosquito control experts. "The mosquito marketing kit was introduced at the NPMA public health conference we recently sponsored in New Orleans," said John Neberz, Zoëcon business manager. "The response has been overwhelming, and we are filling orders as fast as we can."
ADAPCO
Adapco provides a full line of larvicides, adulticides, application equipment and technology to the vector control and mosquito control sector. The company is the largest distributor of a full line of vector control and mosquito control products and associated application equipment and technology in the United States. The SD2001 Storm Drain System is small for deployment into storm drains, yet powerful enough to provide sufficient range to clear a typical catch basin.
The SD2001 omni-directional transducer slips easily through a standard 2-inch grate, fully submerged in standing water at the bottom of the drain. This transducer distributes acoustic energy uniformly in the horizontal plane and has a 60-degree volume of vertical coverage. Using the "burst" mode, all of the mosquito larvae within this torrid are killed instantly, the company says.
PRECISION BLEND
"The A-B-Cs of Effective Mosquito Control booklet," from Precision Blend, offers tips and techniques for mosquito control for towns, cities, homes, recreational areas, campgrounds, golf courses, parks, business campuses and other areas. The booklet is written in easy-to-understand language for those not familiar with mosquito control. It also includes basic information on different types of equipment and products for mosquito management.
PRO-TEAM
A Pro-Team IPM Vacuum System from Pro-Team Inc., is a non-chemical pest control solution. The vacuums can control a wide variety of pests, including spiders, cockroaches, wasps, bees and ants as well as non-insect pests and their droppings. The vacuums also remove allergens, fecal material, dead and live specimens, leaving the surrounding environment clean and healthy.
