'Contraception' For Geese Now Available

EPA recently approved new egg hatch control technology for Innolytics’ new product, OvoControl.

RANCHO SANTA FE, CALIF. — EPA recently approved new egg hatch control technology for Innolytics’ new product, OvoControl. Innolytics has developed technology to control the population growth of resident Canada geese. The technology, developed in collaboration with the USDA/APHIS National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC), is essentially oral contraception for birds. The company reports there is no comparable technology on the market in the United States today.

Innolytics, the company that developed the technology, will hold a training conference today, Dec. 15, at the Indianapolis Airport Radisson Hotel. Wildlife control companies from throughout the Midwest as well as State Department of Natural Resource officials will attend the conference.

Innolytics’ developing technology for OvoControl has the support of animal welfare organizations in the U.S. and abroad, including The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) (www.hsus.org). The HSUS Wild Neighbors Program promotes non-lethal means for resolving conflicts between people and wildlife and cultivates understanding and appreciation for wild animals commonly found in cities and towns (www.wildneighbors.org).

The core technology for OvoControl centers on the ability to significantly decrease the hatchability of eggs by feeding treated bait to birds during the reproductive season. The effect is fully reversible and care has been taken to develop a feeding system, which will limit exposure to non-target species, according to Innolytics. USDA conducted research on this technology for several years and continues to evaluate further applications in other pest species.

Innolytics is a privately owned, development stage company. The company focuses on developing humane population management technology for wildlife. For more information visit www.hatchcontrol.com or call Innolytics at 858/759-8012.
