ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Authorities are warning residents against the latest scam by itinerant thieves posing as "snake pest control men."
The Pinellas Sheriff's Office says the scheme led to a theft from a home in Pasadena Wednesday morning. They fear other residents - especially senior citizens - are at risk of becoming victims.
According to detectives, here's how the scam works:
One man poses as a "snake pest control man" and claims he was hired to remove poisonous snakes from the back yard of the resident, usually a woman. He sprays the resident's hand with snake poison and offers to treat the possible injury, asking her to put her hand in a glass of warm water and milk after removing her ring.
While he is helping her in the kitchen, another man is elsewhere in the house, helping himself to her valuables. Before the victim realizes it, her ring and other valuables are gone.
