Adams Bird Control & Consulting Resolves Chavez Center's Pigeon Problem

The Colorado-based company installed netting to a 25,000-square-foot roof in order to keep pigeons off the Genoveva Chavez Community Center.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — City of Santa Fe residents weren’t the only ones
enjoying the benefits of the Genoveva Chavez Community Center. A growing number of pigeons were inhabiting the roof tops of the center — creating a mess and impacting the center’s human visitors.

“We’d seen an increase in pigeons and the mess they make whether it be additional birds, droppings, nesting material or the adult’s offspring on the roof or around the Center,” said Sandy K. Smith, Facility Operations Manager at the City of Santa Fe’s Genoveva Chavez Community Center. “It was at a point where regular cleanings were not the answer for the deterrent of the current or future pigeon population on our roof.”

“Since the completion of the Center, pigeons had been living on the roof amid the mechanical units. Some of our visitors had commented on the mess and odor, so we knew it was time to take further action,” said Frank Archuleta, Project Administrator for the City of Santa Fe. “We had installed owls, but they had only a temporary impact on the birds.”

Adams Bird Control & Consulting was brought in to address the problem. “The Genoveva Chavez Community Center had approximately 200 pigeons living on the roof,” said Ben Adams, CEO of Adams Bird Control & Consulting, LLC. “We took a systematic approach to excluding the birds while taking into consideration the need of the Center to access their roof top systems.”

The project installation took approximately three weeks. It covered approximately 25,000 square feet of roof top and the solution incorporated netting using a construction application and in keeping with the architectural integrity of the structure. The solution was custom-designed to meet the unique requirements of the Center.

“The City of Santa Fe has a no-kill policy when dealing with pest birds,” Adams added. “This matched well with our no-harm approach to bird control.”

“The result has been fantastic,” stated Smith. “There are no pigeons, or signs of their mess, on the roof of the Center now that the netting project is complete.”

“Pigeons can produce 3-4 chicks every 8 weeks year-round in the right conditions, and the more established a colony becomes, the harder it is to remediate against them, so it was important to act quickly on this situation,” Adams noted.

“Adams Bird Control & Consulting worked closely with Center staff to ensure their work minimally impacted normal operations,” noted Archuleta. “Any questions or concerns after the installation were addressed and resolved quickly and professionally.”

Habitat Enrichment provides cleaning services to the Genoveva Chavez Community Center. “The pigeons were creating an unmanageable situation,” commented Craig Small, owner of Habitat Enrichment. “I brought in Adams Bird Control & Consulting to help find a permanent solution to this problem.”
“Our experience with this approach and solution were so positive that other City of Santa Fe buildings will be looking at implementing other Adams Bird Control & Consulting solutions to address their bird problems,” Archuleta said.
