Advanced Services for Pest Control and Hammond’s Ferry recently sponsored a fund raising event called “Springfest on the Savannah” to benefit Leukemia and Lymphoma Society research. The idea for this event resulted from a meeting between David Towles, owner of Edge Salon; Manuel Verney-Carron, owner of Manuel’s Bread Café; Wendy Poss, Sales at Hammond’s Ferry, Jeff Annis and Dena Thomas, Advanced Services.
We learned that 7 year old Brennan Simkins, the son of one of the project developers had been diagnosed with a blood cancer. We decided to have an event that would be fun for attendees and raise money to help our friend.
Advanced customers and the community made donations to attend an event that included wine tasting, haircuts, and ice cream sundaes on May 8 from 4 pm until dark. Advanced Services sponsored free rides for attendees on the Patriot Riverboat. In conjunction with this event, Hammond’s Ferry held their Brick Yard Market event featuring vendors and organic produce from the area. There were two bands playing - one at the riverfront and one at the market.
In all, fifteen hundred dollars was collected from the event, and Advanced Services matched the contribution in honor of the Simkins family. Brennan who was diagnosed with a blood cancer is receiving a bone marrow transplant and other therapy in Atlanta this month.
Advanced Services and the Georgia Pest Control Association have been involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and specifically the Light the Night event since 2004. Advanced has raised more than thirty thousand dollars for the L & L Society and GPCA has raised $516,668 since we partnered with the charity. This year Advances Services has a goal of $7000 and GPCA's goal is $105,000. If you would like to donate to LLS, you may go to Advanced Services donation page at http://pages.lightthenight.org/ga/Augusta09/bugstopper. Remember that Advanced Services matches dollar for dollar all donations received.
The 2009 annual Light the Night walk will be October 3rd at the Augusta Common. Light The Night is the nation's night to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer.
