LANCASTER, Pa. – Akita Pest Control, Lancaster, Pa., recently found itself in a “good news, bad news” situation. The good news was that the company’s power-spraying services for large facilities were in demand. The bad news was that these time-involved services were in demand during its busy season.

“We had to book them out and price them up because these treatments were so time consuming,” said Damon Leon, director of operations, Akita.

So company leaders sat down and put their collective heads together to come up with a solution that make these treatments quicker and more productive. Owner Bobby Leon suggested the use of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).

“Shortly after, we purchased an ATV and ordered a power spray rig to attach to the back of it. After utilizing it just once — at a large 77-unit condominium complex — we were shocked by the results. In the past, it would take us six hours to do this treatment,” Damon Leon said. “This time around with the ATV, we were able to finish it in less than three.”

Leon said the time-savings come from not having to drag around a 100-foot hose and having to move the rig attached trailer constantly. He said the company has decided to stick with this ATV process and “have successfully doubled our production on power sprays. We can book more jobs, schedule customers faster, and technicians are far less fatigued by the end of the day.”

Leon said he wanted to share Akita’s experiences because he thinks other pest control companies could benefit from this idea.
