SEATTLE – Two years ago, Alex Brooks decided to take part in a pest control conference in Oregon. Brooks said what drew his attention the most was the people in the industry, which kept him interested in working with pest control owners/operators using his year’s of marketing experience.

Through the conference, he was introduced to the Washington State Pest Management Association and asked to do a ride along with a pest control company’s technician to learn more about the industry.

“I absolutely loved it,” Brooks said. “It was fun to me.”

After that first ride along with a pest control technician, Brooks said he thought it was important to share the stories and film “exciting details behind the job.”

After several months of this venture, Brooks considered producing short-format videos to bring educational awareness to the pest control industry. These short videos turned into a mission to spotlight home service professionals and their critical work that is often overlooked, Brooks said

“These companies are here to serve [their] community. That’s what they’re doing,” he said. “They’re serving the community to keep people safe.”

Brooks created a "Local Service Legendz" video series to share the behind-the-scenes stories of services done by pest management professionals in the industry, as well as highlighting other home service professionals in HVAC, construction and plumbing sectors.

“What people have to understand about marketing your business is not only does it help you get more customers, but it also helps you get more employees and contractors,” Brooks said. “When people are applying to your company, they’re going to look for things about your company that make them excited.”

In 2017, Brooks started the company Entreprov, which helps companies create email marketing systems. Brooks said that people can tend to jump from industry to industry, but there’s an abundance of opportunities for people to grow in the pest control industry.

“What I’ve noticed about pest control is you can start in the industry and then you may bounce around, but you may still stay in the industry, which is powerful,” said Brooks.

One of Brooks’ favorite series so far has featured three companies on three Hawaiian Islands. Brooks’ industry connections were able to help him schedule a ride along with Hilo Termite Pest Control in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

“There’s an after effect of excitement as I watch the film,” Brooks said. “I’m learning more about these people, their background, their passion and what makes them special.”

The ones who are spotlighted by “Local Service Legendz” are who Brooks considers local heroes, he said.

“I’ve always been a big fan of people that are masters of their craft,” Brooks said. “That’s always been a thing for me because it’s inspired me, but it’s also helped me obsess about whatever it is I’m focused on in my career [and] in my personal life.”

One of the main goals Brooks has for the company is to encourage young professionals to join trade industries. Currently, “Local Service Legendz” is focused on filming regional pest control companies in Washington state and along the West Coast. Brooks said he hopes to expand the business to highlight companies across the U.S.

“It’s a big vision,” said Brooks. “There’s a lot that I see trying to accomplish. It all starts with ground zero.”
