Attended by more than 45,000 visitors, including international visitors, Uncle Dave Macon Days is one of the very few old-time music competitions in the country. In 1986, the United States House of Representatives proclaimed these competitions to be the National Championships in Old-Time Banjo, Old-Time Clogging and Old-Time Buck Dancing. A purse of more than $6,100 was at stake during the dance and music competitive events July 13-14.
“It’s important to participate in your community. We’re only a couple of blocks away from Cannonsburgh Village, where one of the biggest annual events in Middle Tennessee takes place,” said Ameri Care Owner Tom Swett. “We basically slow down business and open our 1.3-acre lot for three days, providing parking and a free shuttle service to the event. The money we raise for parking goes toward our support efforts for some of our local charities including the Heart of Tennessee American Red Cross, Special Kids and the Boys and Girls Club.”
Uncle Dave Macon was the first entertainer inducted into the Grand Ole Opry’s Hall of Fame. He wrote and sang tunes blending gospel, bluegrass and country into unique storytelling lyrics such as “Keep My Skillet Good and Greasy.” Born in Middle Tennessee, Macon made his home in Readyville, Tenn., in Rutherford County. Prior to his Opry fame, he was a wagon master who would sing and play his banjo to entertain his customers.
“We live and work in the heart of country music’s birthplace,” Swett said. “Uncle Dave Macon Days remains one of our area’s most visited events by people from all over the world. It’s not just competition, it’s historical preservation of our country’s dance and music past.”
