ARS Honors Scientists For Pest Control Research

The USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) honored this year's top scientists, many of whom contributed research important to the structural pest control industry.

The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) honored eight ARS Area Early Career Scientists for 2004. Among those honored were:

James F. Campbell, U.S. Grain Marketing and Production Research Center, Manhattan, Kan., for pioneering research on stored-product insect pest behavior and ecology, resulting in information that can be used to improve integrated pest management in food facilities.

In addition ARS scientists were honored by their agency for moving a variety of technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace. ARS experts honored for "Superior Efforts in Technology Transfer" included:

Entomologists Maria Guadalupe Rojas and Juan A. Morales-Ramos, both at the Jamie Whitten Delta States Research Center, Stoneville, Miss., for collaborations with Ensystex, Inc., of Fayetteville, N.C., and Waterbury Companies, Inc., of Waterbury, Conn., to formulate effective new baits to kill insect pests including Formosan subterranean termites, red imported fire ants and other pests that can cause millions of dollars worth of damage every year.

ARS is the chief scientific research agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
