PITTSBURGH – Bayer Corporation is among 20 U.S. companies Working Mother magazine honors in its May issue featuring the “2008 Best Green Companies for America’s Children.”
To arrive at its list of the most environmentally responsible companies for 2008, Working Mother editors compared the best environmental practices of leading corporations. The 20 companies selected were those that demonstrated “green” product innovation and those most in tune with environmental concerns.
“Bayer is honored to receive this latest recognition from Working Mother magazine,” said Dr. Attila Molnar, President and CEO of Bayer Corporation. Bayer is also listed on Working Mother magazine’s most recent list of “100 Best Companies.”
“Bayer works to improve the lives of present and future generations. We understand that the big social and environmental challenges of our age, once seen as obstacles to progress, are opportunities for further innovation and growth,” said Molnar.
Bayer is engaged in worldwide environmental programs while bolstering growth in its health care, crop science and high-tech materials businesses. Bayer is investing nearly $2 billion over the next three years in climate-related R&D and has set ambitious goals for greenhouse gas reductions. By 2020, Bayer MaterialScience aims to cut its carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent for every metric ton of product it makes. Absolute emissions from the less energy intensive Bayer businesses, Bayer CropScience and Bayer HealthCare, will also be cut by 15 and 5 percent, respectively. Bayer overall has already reduced its absolute global greenhouse gas emissions by a significant 36 percent between 1990 and 2006.
Bayer CropScience is also working to develop more stress-tolerant plants that deliver good yields under extreme conditions like heat or drought—possible consequences of global warming. Bayer MaterialScience products, like polyurethane building insulation, save 70 times the energy used to manufacture the material. Lightweight automobile products reduce gasoline consumption and auto emissions without compromising safety.
