Former NFL Player Shares Advice for Breaking Down Change Barriers

Eric Boles, now a business advisor, shared simple steps leaders can take for bettering themselves and their businesses at NPMA PestWorld 2021.

LAS VEGAS - "The real celebration of your success is what you had to go through to get it." This important reminder was communicated not from a business professor or ex-CEO, but from retired NFL football player Eric Boles, who is now a successful executive advisor, coach and trainer. His business, Game Changers, Inc., provides assessment, consulting, coaching and corporate training. Boles spoke at PestWorld’s Thursday General Session, sponsored by Syngenta.

As expected, many of the concepts of high-performance that Boles shared with attendees came from his playing days (he was a receiver for the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers). What might not have been expected was Boles setting the stage for his presentation by discussing oak trees. Yes, oak trees. Boles said that while most people look at the beauty and strength of oak trees from a distance, what’s impressive about oak trees are the hundreds, maybe thousands, of acorns in an oak tree that undergo an amazing journey to becoming an oak tree. For example, oak trees grow the strongest in the winter, so in places like Colorado (where Boles's daughter was attending college) in cold, snowy climates.

"What was amazing is that that tree was 300 years old, meaning it not only survived, but thrived in 300 Colorado winters," said Boles. "During wintertime the tree had to work twice as hard below the surface to thrive above the surface."

Boles drew a parallel of this struggle to grow under adversity to present-day businesses that learned how to adapt and grow during the challenges of COVID-19.

Boles provided PestWorld attendees with a list are four “barriers to change” that must be overcome in order to grow and prosper.
1. We’re OK just the way we are. Boles used the analogy of a football team with a big lead that gets complacent and lets the other team catch up. If you are coasting, that means you are going downhill, he was reminded by a mentor.
2. Fear of the unknown. Boles said effective leaders foster an environment where workers “overcome the unknown.” He said the key for leaders is minimizing unknowns and providing as much clarity as possible. “Take time to figure out what the next 12 months might look like and communicate that [to your team].”
3. Fear of failure. Again, Boles reflected on his playing days as an NFL receiver when he was so worried about not dropping a pass before a play happened that he “got what he was focused on.” One suggestion Boles gave to PestWorld attendees to help them overcome fear of failure was to hold training sessions that discuss past mistakes. This lets them know that it's okay to fail, as long as you learn from mistakes.
4. Fear of rejection. No one likes hearing they are wrong. Boles’ advice for overcoming fear of failure is to constantly keep asking for feedback, both formally and informally. Then, do a self-evaluation and determine how you can make yourself better in order to decrease the chances of being rejected.
