With 200 delegates from around the world already registered, the organizers say it is still not too late to register for the 6th International Conference on Urban Pests (ICUP 2008) to be held on July 13-16, in Budapest, Hungary.

This triennial conference offers an excellent forum for exchanging ideas and information on the biology and control of pests in urban environments. The event attracts prominent entomologists, pest management and chemical professionals, university scientists and authorities from all over the world.

It is most appropriate that the conference is to be held in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, as the city is well-known for its experience in large scale urban rodent and cockroach control. The World Health Organization (WHO) cites the deratization campaign performed in the city in the early 1970s and its subsequent maintenance as one of the best organized long-term rodent control programs in the world.

The conference commences on Monday, July 14 with plenary sessions consisting of seven presentations from internationally acclaimed experts. Topics to be covered include vector-borne diseases in Europe, the future of the pest management industry in the 21st century, an evidence-based analysis of the current bed bug situation, thermal damage to construction materials by termites, management of mosquito-borne diseases in Europe as well as global quality standards and pest management service.

Close-up and personal specialist groups
On days two and three (July 15 and 16), delegates break into parallel scientific sessions with papers, posters and workshops covering: household and industrial pests; medical and veterinary pests; wood-infesting pests; application technology and pest management programs.

Dr Daniel Bajomi, chairman of the organizing committee explains: “By running parallel sessions, delegates can concentrate on those topics most relevant to their professional interest. The groups will be small so facilitating discussion and an interchange of ideas. In total over 60 papers will be presented along with nearly 30 poster presentations.”

Not all work
Time is also set aside for social and networking opportunities. This includes a welcome reception on Sunday evening and an optional traditional Hungarian gala dinner and horse show.

The conference will be held in English with proceedings available in print and on CD. It will be held at the brand-new Europa Congress Center located next to the green areas of Budapest, at the base of the Buda hills.
