Bush Touts Plan to Curb Prices on Gas

The President launched a four-part plan that includes investigations of possible price gouging by the oil industry and a delay in refilling the nation's strategic reserves.

President George W. Bush, under growing pressure to tackle U.S. gas prices that experts predict will hover near $3 all summer, launched a four-part plan Tuesday that includes investigations of possible price gouging by the oil industry and a delay in refilling the nation's strategic reserves.

Industry experts responded by saying high gas prices are caused by a variety of factors, few of which can be eased in the next few months by the president's proposals. Bush himself warned that "the prices that people are paying at the gas pumps reflect our addiction to oil."

"Energy experts predict gas prices are going to remain high throughout the summer, and that's going to be a continued strain on the American people," Bush said in a speech to the Renewable Fuels Association.
