CHICAGO — Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and corporate and community leaders dedicated the Carlos H. Cantu Children and Family Center Friday in the Little Village neighborhood.
The center is the latest initiative by El Valor, a non-profit organization, to fulfill the social needs of the fast growing Hispanic and non-Hispanic communities in the Chicago area.
The Carlos H. Cantu Center, the fourth community center operated by El Valor, is a $7.7 million, 28,000-square-foot facility that will serve more than 500 children under age 5 and more than 1,000 families who live in the highly populated Little Village and surrounding communities.
"Today, we honor Carlos, who was a leader and exemplified the many people who helped make El Valor a valuable and much needed resource for families and children," said Rey Gonzalez, chairman of the El Valor board of directors, in a statement. "The services offered at this center will provide the foundation for a healthy and successful community."
Cantu, who died in September 2003, was a former senior chairman of The ServiceMaster Co.
