SALISBURY, N.C. - Officials at Catawba College in Salisbury closed more than half its dormitory buildings Wednesday so exterminators could deal with a growing problem of bedbugs.
Students living in Abernethy Village, on the west end of the school’s campus, were told to leave their dormitory rooms and take all their clothing and bedding to be washed. About 120 of the school’s 1,000 students were affected.
Meanwhile, officials at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem announced stepped-up efforts to deal with bed bugs, which are becoming a major problems across the United States.
At Catawba, school officials said they received a few complaints last week and increased pest management control efforts. But, they said, the problem grew rapidly this week.
