SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Central Life Sciences, makers of Diacon IGR, Centynal Insecticide and Pyronyl Crop Spray, announced the launch of its new, free web-based application, www.GrainBugs.com. The new mobile-optimized app was developed to help stored grain operators properly and quickly identify stored grain insects, and it includes the ability to take and submit photos for identification assistance.
“Stored grain insects cost this industry hundreds of millions of dollars every year in lost profits, and we felt there was a definite need for a cutting-edge technology like this web-based app to help address the issue,” said Nancy Stratinsky, Business Manager, Specialty Agriculture for Central Life Sciences. “Quickly and successfully identifying insects is the first step toward solving stored grain infestations, and that’s what we are helping producers do with www.GrainBugs.com.”
The GrainBugs.com app provides detailed pictures and dimensions, feeding habits, signs of infestations and control tips to help identify several stored grain insects, including the lesser grain borer, rice weevil, Indian meal moth, saw-toothed grain beetle, confused flour beetle and granary weevil. The app also allows users to take and submit a photo of insects with a smartphone camera and have a Central Life Science expert respond to the inquiry regarding the type of pest and information on how to treat the infestation.
“This app will help increase the number of insects correctly identified in grain,” said Stratinksy. “Our hope is to further educate stored grain operators on how to treat their infestations correctly at the first sign of a problem.”
The application requires no download, and it can be accessed on any computer, tablet or smartphone at www.GrainBugs.com.
