QUEPOS, Costa Rica. — The 15th Annual Offshore World Championship (OWC) fishing tournament broke the world record with 2,307 sailfish, 7 blue marlin and 63 dolphin – and that was just three days into the four day event.
“The 2014 Offshore World Championship hosted by Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, Costa Rica has beaten the world record of tournament billfish releases with 2,314 in just three days of fishing,” said Carter Takacs, Marina Operations Manager of Marina Pez Vela. “The last three day record was 2,170 releases, which was also set this year on the central pacific coast of Costa Rica.”
After setting the world record for most billfish released in a three day tournament span, day four wrapped up with a total of 2,735 billfish releases (including seven blue marlin, one black marlin and one striped marlin). There were 79 qualifying dorado over the 25-pound minimum also weighed in.
