INDIANAPOLIS — The Pest Control Operators of California (PCOC) and Dow AgroSciences, the manufacturer of Vikane® gas fumigant, are pleased to announce the winners of the fifth annual “Fumigation Banner Bonanza Contest.” The contest recognizes California fumigators for displaying easily read, professional and creative signs around fumigation sites.

For the third year in a row, the first-place prize was awarded to Specialty Inspections, Inc., formerly known as Specialty Termite, of Pleasanton, Calif. Contest rules do not allow a banner to win in multiple years, so Specialty Inspections has won three years in a row by using a new banner each time. The company’s 2008 banner features a picture of a large hand flicking a termite and a tag line that reads, “Termites Don’t Stand a Chance.”

“Banners at fumigation sites are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to reach customers,” explains Mark Kearns, president and owner of Specialty Inspections. “The tents already attract people’s attention. When you strategically place a large banner on them, people are naturally going to read it. We receive a lot of positive feedback on our banners — and we’re proud of them.”

Finishing in second place was Joshua’s Pest Control, based in San Diego, with a banner depicting the company logo on a blue and white background and a cartoon image of a heroic-looking man roping a group of termites and exclaiming, “Another home saved!” Taking third was a banner from the San

Francisco Bay area’s Big Valley Termite & Pest Control that features the companies’ logos in purple and green on a white background and boasts, “Another quality fumigation by Mission City Fumigation and Big Valley Termite and Pest Control.”

Earning honorable mentions in this year’s contest were Nix Termite, Inc., Bonita, Calif.; Squish It Termite, Clovis, Calif.; Ecola Termite & Pest Control Services, serving Southern California; Kilroy Pest Control, San Jose, Calif.; and Delk Pest Control, Stockton, Calif.

Participating fumigation companies submitted color photos of their banners, which were required to feature a distinguishable logo, the business name and phone number, and be visible to passers-by. Banners were judged on readability from a distance, professionalism, visual impact and attractiveness. The first-place winner received a $1,500 gift certificate, while second- and third-place finishers received $1,000 and $500 gift certificates, respectively.

“We’re proud to support this contest as a way to help our fumigator partners build their businesses,” says Elisha Priebe, Dow AgroSciences marketing manager for Vikane gas fumigant.
