DAYTON – A recent addition to Extermital’s Dayton, Ohio office has caught the attention of employees and visitors alike: the company’s new “airplane” — a 60-size (almost scale) model airplane that has a 70-inch wingspan. It shouldn’t come as a surprise the plane is a hit in Dayton, which is home to Orville and Wilbur Wright, the brothers credited with inventing and building the world's first successful airplane.

The Extermital model plane was built by Terry Pooler, a service technician who specializes in bed bug work and a builder of model airplanes for the past eight years.

“This plane was in a modeling magazine,” Pooler said. “I wanted to build something that would fly nice and slow and land easy. The design was of an old barnstormer and the colors were the same as Extermital’s. I could not think of a better way to put our name out there among my fellow flyers.”

As he does with all of the model airplanes he builds, Pooler modified this plane; in this case the modifications make it fly like a lazy glider. “I added custom decals, reinforced the wings and added weight,” he said. “I also doubled the firewall where the engine mounts. I installed a 4-stroke engine so it would sound more like a full-scale plane. My fellow workers have told me it is really cool looking and it came out nice.”

Pooler said his interest in model airplane building was sparked simply from the enjoyment he received watching other people fly their model airplanes. “I enjoy it for the fact that I put them together and get to watch them come to life as they fly through the air.”

In addition to the Extermital plane, other planes built by Pooler include: Japanese Zero; Ryan STA; Se-5 biplane; Waco biplane; Revolver; Mad dog; Dragon lady; T-28 trojan and two Super Stars.

So what does it take to be successful at building model airplanes? “I guess what it takes is patience and planning,” Pooler said. “The first thing I do is plan how it can be modified to fit the flying conditions in my area (which is prone to being wind-blown).”
