Years after being nearly eradicated from Orange County, pest control experts say fire ants are actually expanding into new territory on County's northern rim.
The spread of the ants had been kept under control within Orange County, primarily because of a voter approved fee approved in 2004 to pay for local ant treatment.
But without similar programs in surrounding counties, officials say it was only a matter of time before the biting bugs were back.
A recent survey show the ants are expanding their range along Los Angeles County's border with Orange County. And in Riverside County ants are resurging. They are also a problem in Lake Elsinore, which is heavily infested, and in the Coachella Valley
