The southeast section of Guilford County is already under quarantine for fire ants, and experts say the problem could spread to other parts of the Triad in the next couple of weeks.
Fire ants typically like to build their nest in soil, but that doesn't mean they can't come into your home. Chase Hazelwood with Go-Forth Pest Management in High Point says fire ants can excavate soil underneath concrete, causing it to collapse in extreme cases.
"We've seen them invade a lot of electrical, heating and air conditioning and what they can do is chew through wires, the insulation of the wires or where the two wires are connected. They can fill it with soil or some moist material and jump the electrical gap and shorts it out." Hazelwood said.
