TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- A study done by Joshua R. King and Walter R. Tschinkel of Florida State shows that red fire ants, or Solenopsis invicta, survive better when the land they inhabit has been disturbed in some way. This is why they live near shopping centers and other areas where dirt has been plowed up, researchers said.
