Florida has listed its first human fatality to the African or Africanized bees (known to the media as "Killer Bees").
The death occurred in northwestern Okeechobee County on April 9.
In the 17-18 years since Africanized honeybees entered the U.S, this county has averaged about one death per year to this subspecies of honeybee.
Compare this to the 1,598 who died from falls on stairs or the 18 who died from dog bites in just the year 2002 alone.
