Florida Anti-Termite Campaign Deemed Successful

The initial counterattack succeeded against an invading species of termite that had begun to colonize South Florida, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture.

The department's workers sprayed pesticide at 47 sites in western Dania Beach earlier this month, seeking to eradicate the Nasutitermes corniger termite, a Caribbean species that tunnels up the sides of houses and displays a ravenous appetite for hardwood.

Workers spent four days treating houses, trees, vacant lots and other sites where the termites had been found.
