Jim Fredericks, Mike Bentley Give Facebook Live Chats

The NPMA entomologists discussed how the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent changes to human behavior could be impacting pests.

FAIRFAX, Va. - Last week, Dr. Jim Fredericks and Dr. Mike Bentley, entomologists from the National Pest Management Association, joined the @PestWorld Facebook page for Live Chats with consumers about how the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent changes to human behavior could be impacting pests. The videos have already generated over 22,000 views. See below for a description of the issues and links to the recordings.

During his Live Chat on Tuesday, Fredericks discussed the impact of business and facility closures on rodent behavior, potentially forcing them into new environments and territories in search of food. He also acknowledged the ongoing work being done by pest control professionals, explaining that the industry has been deemed an essential service in many areas around the country and citing their efforts to protect public health, property and food. Check out the full chat here.

On Thursday, Bentley talked about how the increasing amount of time that people are spending at home during the pandemic could impact pest behavior, potentially even making homes more attractive to pests. While tactics like social distancing are of the utmost importance right now, he cautioned consumers about potentially trading one health threat for another and shared timely pest prevention tips for homeowners. Similar to Fredericks, Bentley also cited the ongoing efforts of the pest control industry and recommended homeowners continue to reach out to their local professional when dealing with an infestation.
