It all started on Nov. 7, 1980, when company founder Richard Foster, a self-made entrepreneur, established GIE Publishing with the acquisition of Pest Control Technology magazine from the industry’s Scherzinger family, owners of Cincinnati-based Scherzinger Pest Control. In the summer of 1981, Foster acquired the copyrights to the Mallis Handbook of Pest Control. This proved to be an enduring industry accomplishment, resulting in the publication of the seventh, eighth and ninth editions of this essential reference book. It also became the foundation of a vigorous book publishing operation which today provides dozens of comprehensive industry titles and has expanded to include a line of CD-ROMs and industry directories.
Soon after the acquisition of PCT in 1980, GIE expanded with the launch of Lawn Care Professional (LCP) magazine in 1981. Two years later, in 1983, GIE acquired American Lawn Applicator (ALA) magazine and merged LCP into ALA. In 1991, GIE changed the name of ALA to Lawn & Landscape to better reflect the expansion of the landscape contractor industry served by the magazines. Today, Lawn & Landscape magazine is a leading monthly business-to-business publication serving the landscape contractor industry. Further growth for GIE would come in 1987 with the acquisition of Recycling Today, a monthly business-to-business publication serving the recycling industry.
The 1990s saw GIE evolve from strictly a publishing company to a producer of industry leading conferences, interactive media, and references. PCT’s growth was marked by the advent of www.pctonline.com — the first online information portal for the PCO market — and the PCT Conferences & Seminar Division. Parallel growth occurred within our other publications, so it was only natural that in 2000 we changed our name from GIE Publishing to GIE Media Inc. In 2005, GIE’s leadership was expanded with the addition of Chris Foster as president and COO. Chris works closely with father, Richard Foster, chairman and CEO of GIE Media, to chart the company’s future growth.
Today, GIE Media Inc. delivers award-winning, industry-leading business-to-business publications to the horticulture, public health, recycling, snow management and specialized manufacturing industries. GIE offers its clients a wide-range of marketing and communication opportunities within its comprehensive group of leading magazines that include Today’s Medical Developments, Golf Course News, Lawn & Landscape, Recycling Today and Pest Control Technology. Each of GIE Media’s eleven publications provides the most relevant and useful news and information available in their respective industries.
GIE Media’s history is one of phenomenal vision and success, and we expect nothing less for our future.
