NORCROSS, Ga. — For almost three decades, the Georgia Pest Control Association has awarded annual scholarships to members’ children. It was a way to enhance the value of being a member of GPCA and also emphasize the importance of family which has been a mainstay throughout our Association’s history. Since 1986 we have awarded 126 scholarships. Funding for the Burnett Scholarship comes from a portion of the revenue collected at the GPCA Annual Charity Golf Tournament.
Each of the winners will receive a $500 scholarship to use toward their college education:
Cassidy Partain, daughter of Chuck Partain, technician at Allgood Pest Solutions, Duluth. Cassidy plans to attend Columbus State University, Columbus.
“Thank you! I'm honored to be selected as a recipient of the 2014 Burnett Scholarship. The scholarship money will help me reduce the amount of out of pocket costs for my first semester of college, most likely going towards books. I plan to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. I would like to work in labor and delivery or become a traveling nurse helping those in need in various location.”
Lindsey Whitten, daughter of Brad Whitten, Senior Vice President of Operations for Arrow Exterminators. Lindsey plans to attend the University of Georgia in Athens.
“I am extremely grateful to have received the GPCA Burnett Scholarship. It will help me out tremendously in my next few years as a college student. I will use the scholarship for help with purchasing the books I will need for my studies in the fall. I plan on following a Pre-Medical track at the University while majoring in Dietetics. After my four years at Georgia, I would like to go on to get my Master’s Degree and possibly attend Medical School.”
Holly Freeman, daughter of Don Freeman, technician at BugBusters in Woodstock. Holly plans to attend Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.
“Thank you so much for selecting me to be the recipient for the GPCA Burnett Scholarship Fund. I am very happy and excited about receiving this scholarship!
I will primarily be studying Early Childhood Education with a minor in International Affairs. This scholarship will be helpful in covering the costs I have for room & board and my books. The scholarship will be one less thing on the list of things I need to pay for this fall, and I am so thankful for that! It is an honor and blessing to receive this scholarship, so thank you again!”
Catherine White, daughter of Sammy White, technician at Cooks Pest Control, Rome. Catherine will attend Rhinehardt College in Walleska.
This award will help me pay for my books that I would not have had the money for! Future plans: I am going to the community college in my town and I will be studying criminal justice. “
Gresham Conway, son of Ralph Conway, Owner/Operator of E-Con Exterminators, Millen. Gresham will attend Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
“The Glenn Burnett Scholarship is going to be very financially helpful in my college endeavors in the upcoming semesters. Luckily, I will not have to take out any loans my first year of college thanks to the Georgia Pest Control Association and the Glenn Burnett Scholarship. It will help me pay for my books and institution fees, two of the biggest expenses I will have to pay for in college. I have been accepted into the Regents Engineering Transfer Program. In this program, students take their first two years at a local college and then transfer to Georgia Tech to obtain their degree. I plan on majoring in electrical engineering, and working in either the robotics or space exploration fields.
Madison Blair Stewart, daughter of Jason Hulsey, manager of Empire Pest Control, Gainesville. Madison will attend Truett McConnell College in Cleveland.
“This scholarship will help me with the expense of books and supplies needed to attend college. I plan to major in Education and become a Secondary Level Teacher and Basketball Coach. Your financial generosity has allowed me to be one step closer to my goal and has inspired me to help others by giving back to the community.”
Eric Borstelmann, son of Shirley Borstelmann, administrative assistant for Northwest Exterminating in Canton. Eric will attend Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw.
“I am thankful for this scholarship for the fact that a college education is very important to a successful future and also that money for college is hard to come by. I plan to use this scholarship money to help pay my way through College. I'm not sure what my major will be, but these years are for figuring out what I want my future to be so thank you and the rest of the Georgia Pest Control Association for helping me start.”
Josie Taylor, daughter of Steve Taylor, termite technician for Taylor Exterminating, Senoia. Josie will attend Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
“Thank you so much! I am honored to have received the GPCA Burnett scholarship. I will use this scholarship to help pay for my tuition and purchase books for my classes. I plan to study Nursing, so I can become a nurse anesthetist.”
Kooper Groce, daughter of Samantha Groce, office manager, Thomaston Pest and Termite Control, Thomaston. Kooper will attend Gordon State College in Barnesville.
“Thank you for choosing me to receive the GPCA Burnett Scholarship. This award will be very helpful in paying some of my college expenses. As a child, I had a speech impediment. My plan is to major in education and to become a speech pathologist so that I can someday help children who have the same disability.”
Andy Ray Wengrow, Jr, son of Andy Wengrow, owner of Wengrow’s Pest Control, Lincolnton. Andy will attend Berry College in Rome.
“I will use this scholarship to aid me in furthering my education while also playing football for the Berry Vikings. This money will go towards my college expenses.”
Miranda Windham, daughter of Eddie Windham, Vice President and Manager, White & Lavender Pest Control, Macon. Miranda will attend Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.
“I will use this scholarship as an aid to help me obtain an education that I would use to act on my passion of service. With my education I could reach out and perform tasks to help better my community. I would love to use my nursing skills to make a difference in someone’s life every day. Thank you all for affording me this opportunity. Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated.”
Alyssa Scarboro, daughter of Forester Scarboro, manager Yates Astro, Savannah. Alyssa will attend Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.
“Thank you so much for this scholarship and this opportunity! It's helping more than you know! I plan to major in psychology. In the future, I also plan to earn a Master’s and a Ph.D. in social work to pursue a career as a counseling psychologist. I'm so thankful for this scholarship, which will make my college experience at GCSU possible by paying for books, fees, and other experiences. Thank you GPCA!”
