GPCA Commemorates 55th Anniversary

The Georgia Pest Control Association has grown from a small group of professionals to a large force since its founding in 1950.

NORCROSS, Ga – In 1950, a group of Georgia pest control professionals decided to band together to share information and experiences. That small group of PMPs, now numbering more than 800 member companies, is now an influential force in the pest control industry in the State of Georgia. A full time executive director, Valera Jessee coordinates the association, working with over 47 regional leaders and officers in 18 regions of the state. “In the 20 years I’ve been with GPCA, I have seen tremendous growth and development, not only in the organization itself, but in its individual members,” she states. “We stand for all that’s good in the pest control industry.”

GPCA actively promotes the pest control industry in the community in a variety of ways, informing the public of its professionalism and the vital need for its services. During the activities week at the Winter GPCA Conference, members of the association focused on encouraging students to study entomology. The association provides financial support for 4-H to offer awards in entomology and send winners to national competitions. In addition, four scholarships are awarded each year to children of GPCA members, funded exclusively through the association’s golf tournament.

2005 marks the fifth Leadership Class that, over the past seven years, has graduated 64 industry leaders. These graduates go on to fill various leadership positions with GPCA, and they are also well-equipped to be leaders in their companies and the industry in general. This program is unique to GPCA.

Education has been central in importance since the inception of the GPCA. In 2004, GPCA conducted five, six-week pest control technology courses that resulted in a 90% pass rate on the state PCO exam. Free training is offered through the year, with 72 regional meetings held during 2004 with an average attendance of 30 as well as five large state-wide educational events. Training materials are also available to members.

Community support and involvement is important at GPCA. The association has adopted the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to support and, with participating companies, raised a total of $60,000 in 2004.

GPCA was the first state association in 1987 to hold a legislative event. Continued lobbying on behalf of the pest control industry in Georgia has resulting in continued funding for the Formosan Research project for the 4th year. The association has gained the prestige, influence and respect of state legislators through its frequent contact. Communication with its members has taken on new importance over the years and now includes a professional 36+ page monthly magazine, a Pest Control Month kit for members, and a recently updated website.

“GPCA members are proud of their affiliation with this organization not only because of the benefits they derive, but also because it upholds the high ideals of professional pest control companies in Georgia,” explains Valera.
