Hampton Roads' Fire Ant Quarantine Now Permanent

The region's fire ant quarantine is now permanent after action last week by the Virginia Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

In late June, officials placed the region under temporary quarantine and said the state would no longer apply chemical treatments used to kill the insects, leaving that job to local governments.

State officials will continue to treat fire-ant colonies outside the region.

The quarantine covers 11 localities in South Hampton Roads and on the Peninsula.
