SANTA FE, N.M. — The Health Department announced Tuesday that a young man from McKinley County became the second New Mexican this year to die of hantavirus — a severe respiratory illness. The victim died Monday afternoon after being admitted to University of New Mexico Hospital on Friday, hospital spokesman Sam Giammo said.
The Sin Nombre Virus can be transmitted by infected rodents, particularly deer mice, through urine, droppings or saliva.
