The hiring challenges confronting Canadian pest management companies aren’t going to be letting up any time soon. In fact, expect them to only get worse.
According to the August 2022 Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada, the number of Canadians considering a job change is on the rise. Nearly 12 per cent of permanent employees were planning to leave their jobs in the next 12 months, almost double the level recorded in January 2022 (6.4 per cent). And nearly 20 percent of hourly workers with wages in the bottom 20 per cent of the pay scale in August were planning to do the same.
Survey respondents said salary and benefits (85.4 per cent) were a very important or essential factor that influences a job change. Other factors were workplace health and safety (82.2 per cent), job security (81.7 per cent) and the relationship with their supervisor and colleagues (78.5 per cent).
Fewer than half (42.3 per cent) of employees said a flexible work location was important or essential, except among those who usually work from home (67.1 per cent).
The Canadian labour supply also is affected by population aging. In August, 307,000 Canadians left their jobs to retire at some point in the last year, up from 233,000 one year earlier and from 273,000 in August 2019.
