Home Service Companies Will Be in High Demand During 2011, Kudzu.com Study Shows

More than 60 percent of homeowners plan to hire a home service provider in the next 12 months.

ATLANTA – Owners have big plans for their homes this year, but most will not be doing the work themselves, according to new research from the home advice site Kudzu.com.

While some owners will take a DIY approach to their home-related needs in the next year, the Kudzu.com research shows 62 percent of homeowners are planning to hire a home service professional instead. The most popular home services among those who plan to hire a professional will be carpet cleaners (37 percent), handymen (37 percent), house cleaners (31 percent), heating and air experts (29 percent), electricians (27 percent), pest control professionals (26 percent), plumbers (24 percent) and lawn care specialists (24 percent).

“A number of homeowners are asking, why do-it-yourself when someone can do it for you,” said Rhonda Hills, Kudzu.com vice president and chief marketing officer. “The demand for home service professionals has been down in recent years for a number of reasons, but they should get ready for a rebound.”

Home-related projects will also be popular during the next year. The Kudzu.com research shows 79 percent of homeowners are planning to complete a home-related project in the next 12 months and will undertake an average of 4.3 projects each. Among those planning home improvement projects, 94 percent plan to complete interior remodeling projects such as countertops, cabinets, appliances, lighting and flooring. Outdoor projects will also be popular, with 67 percent planning deck, landscaping or hardscaping projects, and 27 percent planning to complete exterior renovations such as new gutters, roofing and siding.

“Savvy homeowners understand the value of working with a professional,” Hills said. “Homeowners understand they can’t and shouldn’t do every home-related project themselves. Many projects require special tools and experience, and others are just too dangerous to attempt. Working with a home service pro allows the owner to get the job done right the first time and frees them up to spend time doing the things they enjoy.”

The Kudzu.com homeowner’s research was conducted by Ipsos Observer between Feb. 10 and Feb. 18. The study included nearly 3,500 respondents from across the country.
