NEW YORK — With the busy holiday travel season upon us, NBC’s “Today Show” dedicated a news segment on an unwelcome travel companion – bed bugs. Last Tuesday’s “Today Show” included a 5-minute story on the re-emergence of bed bugs.
The program included interviews with Gail Getty, entomology professor at UC-Berkeley, and a pair of bed bug experts from Orkin – Technical Director Frank Meek and Branch Manager Pat Wicker.
Meek discussed some of the more obvious areas where bed bugs are a concern – places like hotels and apartments – as we well as not-so obvious locations (e.g., airlines, cruises and movie theaters). Wicker stressed the importance of homeowners calling a professional because they have the proper knowledge, methods and materials.
In the “Today Show” studio was a mattress with (dead) bed bugs. Getty pointed out all the areas of a mattress that people should inspect. She too, re-iterated how crucial it is for homeowners to use a professional and noted that the main reason bed bug treatments fail is customers not following the advice given by their pest management professional.
