Insecticides are rarely available for use in their technical form. The technical grade material must first be mixed or formulated with other components to improve safety, efficacy, handling, application and storage properties.
Components used in mixing or formulating insecticides include carriers, diluents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, solvents and other inert ingredients. Common types of formulations used by pest management professionals include emulsifiable concentrates, wettable powders, microencapsulated insecticides, baits, dusts and aerosols, just to name a few.
Before selecting a formulation, it is helpful to understand the site(s) to be treated. A complete inspection of the property will provide the information needed to select the best formulation(s) for the job.
Carefully consider the following 10 questions when selecting a pesticide formulation:
1. Will the formulation cause phytotoxicity (plant injury) to plants?
2. Is the formulation effective against the target pest?
3. Will the formulation perform well on the surfaces to be treated?
4. How will environmental factors like temperature, humidity, and light affect the formulation?
5. Can the formulation be applied safely in sensitive areas?
6. Is the product cost effective?
7. Does the formulation mix easily?
8. Will the formulation run off or drift during the application?
9. Will there be a problem with visible residues on treated surfaces?
10. Are there regulatory issues that may limit the use of the product?
By answering the aforementioned questions, PMPs will be well equipped to identify the proper formulation for the job, including the formulation best suited for outdoor perimeter treatments.

FAQs About Barricor SP What is Barricor SP? Barricor is a new GIC liquid concentrate from Bayer. It features a new formulation technology with deltamethrin as the active ingredient. The SP in the name is short for Solid Particle formulation. Barricor is the first product registered with this unique formulation technology. The deltamethrin active ingredient is incorporated into solid particles that will ‘stand up’ on complex surfaces and increase the bioavailability of the active ingredient for the target pest. Barricor SP provides excellent results for outdoor perimeter applications at very low rates. Who is the ideal customer for Barricor SP? Barricor was developed for PMP’s providing high-frequency maintenance services who currently leverage economy pyrethroids. Why did Bayer develop this formulation? The company was challenged by customers to design an effective, easy-to-use insecticide for high frequency IPM services that has flexible label language, is technician-friendly, and available at a cost competitive to economy bifenthrin formulations. How does Barricor SP compare across usage rates to bifenthrin products on cost? At its maintenance rate (0.25 fluid ounce/ gallon) Barricor SP is competitive to the 1oz rate of established competitive products at a similar cost per home.
