COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Jay Nixon, president of American Pest Management, Takoma Park, Md., recently had the opportunity to meet E.O. Wilson, the noted ant researcher.

The meeting occurred on Nov. 12, 2008, at the University of Maryland, where Wilson was giving a lecture. In addition to hearing Wilson speak, Nixon was personally introduced to Wilson at a private dinner by University of Maryland Entomology Professor Dr. Barbara Thorne, a former student of Wilson’s who arranged his lecture at UM.

Throughout the years, American Pest Management has worked with Thorne on several termite research projects and has provided assistantships for several of her graduate students. The meet-and-greet with Wilson was Thorne making good on a promise she made to Nixon when she began her tenure at UM nearly 20 years ago.

Wilson is a Pulitzer Prize winning author, U.S. National Medal of Science winner, and one of most recognized entomologist in the U.S. He is universally recognized as the inventor of the field of social biology.
